New Regional Plan to Conserve Pacific Wetlands |
[Nature Conservation]A new draft three-year action plan has been developed outlining activities, responsibilities and targets that seek to promote and strengthen the wise use and conservation of wetlands in the region.
The new Regional Wetlands Action Plan for the Pacific Islands follows on from the original Regional Wetlands Action Plan endorsed by members of the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) in 1999. The new action plan covers the period 2011-2013 and is expected to be finalised this month.

Pacific Waste Newsletter by SPREP |
[Pollution Prevention]The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme has published the first in a series of newsletters that chronicles the progress of solid waste management in the Pacific islands.
This newsletter is an output under the Pacific Regional Solid Waste Management Strategy 2010-2015, which is the region’s guiding document for solid waste management. The Regional Strategy, whose implementation is coordinated by the Secretariat, was developed in 2009 with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
The first newsletter briefly discusses past and upcoming regional solid waste management projects, provides a matrix of regional projects by donor, examines waste management in Tokelau, and provides a summary list of the known solid waste management activities ...(to be continued)

Pacific Islander to vacate seat on World Biodiversity Bureau in October |
[Nature Conservation]Come the end of October, the second Pacific nation to hold a seat on the Bureau for the Convention for Biological Diversity, passes this privilege on.
Tania Temata from the Cook Islands together with Cambodia represents the Asia Pacific Group on this bureau. It is a first for the Cook Islands to be represented on any bureau for the many global multilateral-environmental agreements.
The Bureau for the CBD is like a Board of Directors for a company. It reviews the implementation of the Convention and oversees the preparation of the bi-annual conferences of the parties and all other related meetings in between the conference of the parties. The logistic organisation of the meeting is coordinated by the Secretariat of the Convention of Biological Diversity.

Preparing the One Pacific for international biodiversity negotiations in October |
[Nature Conservation]A three day meeting has brought the Pacific region closer together as the 14 island countries prepare to face the world at the 10th Conference of the Parties for the Convention on Biological Diversity in October. The international agreement was formed to help conserve the worlds biodiversity and establish targets to halt the current rate of biodiversity loss.
The Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) brought together Pacific Island Parties, donors, partners and other interested conservationalists to discuss and deliberate on key biodiversity issues for countries and the region and how they will be approached at the international arena.
